Psychology Pre-Internship Programs:
Overview of Programs:

Center for the Assessment & Prevention of Prodromal States (CAPPS). The Adolescent Serious Mental Illness externship program within the Center for the Assessment and Prevention of Prodromal States (CAPPS) at UCLA's Semel Institute is a 12-month training program for graduate students enrolled in an APA approved Clinical Psychology doctoral program. CAPPS is an early intervention/prevention outpatient clinical research program focused on individuals between the ages of 12 and 35 that are at high-risk for developing psychosis. The emphasis of the training is on psychosocial treatment for adolescent patients and their families, and on psychodiagnostic assessment of prodromal or subthreshold psychotic-like symptoms. Externs participate in several didactic seminars as part of the multidisciplinary treatment team at CAPPS.

(2nd Year) Center for the Assessment & Prevention of Prodromal States (CAPPS). The Center for the Assessment and Prevention of Prodromal States and Adolescent Brain-Behavior Research Clinic (CAPPS/ABBRC) offers 2nd year research placements in neuropsychological assessment, for adolescents and young adults with psychotic disorders, and those who are at very high-risk for developing psychotic disorders. Graduate students will develop cognitive assessment skills and report-writing skills in a challenging clinical population, while broadening their understanding of brain-behavior relationships.

Child Anxiety, OCD, and Tourette's Clinic. The Child OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Externship program at UCLA's Resnick Hospital & Semel Institute is a 12-month training program for graduate students enrolled in an APA approved Clinical Psychology doctoral program. The emphasis of the training is on structured diagnostic assessment of childhood anxiety and tic disorders and empirically validated treatments for these disorders. When schedules permit, externs can participate in the didactic portions of the predoctoral internship rotation offered by our program

Clinical Neuropsychology Research Externship in Pediatric Cognitive Control. One of the Neuropsychology offerings, this track offers clinical research training in the context of a translational research project, as part of the UCLA Center for Intervention Development and Cognitive Control. Trainees in this track learn to appreciate cognitive assessment in clinical and research contexts, and are part of a team that is aiming to understand better the underlying mechanisms of cognitive control that are important to diverse syndromes including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Chronic Tic Disorders.

Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimulogy. The Behavioral Medicine Externship is a joint training activity sponsored by the Semel Institute of the Department of Psychiatry and the School of Dentistry at UCLA. It is offered to students from APA-approved Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs. The externship provides opportunities to evaluate and manage patients with chronic medical illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus and to participate in assessments and consultations with patients with dental pain. This training experience is especially suitable for individuals who have professional interests in health psychology, behavioral medicine, and public health.

Neuropsychology. The Neuropsychology Externship program at UCLA's Resnick Hospital & Semel Institute is a 12-month training program for graduate students enrolled in an APA approved Clinical Psychology doctoral program. The emphasis of the training is on neuropsychological assessment, and there are several rotations, including both clinical and research tracks for geriatric, adult, and pediatric. Externs participate in several didactic seminars that are part of the post-doctoral fellowship program in neuropsychology.

Simms/Mann - UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology. (Formerly the Ted Mann Family Resource Center) The Integrative Oncology Externship at the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology is a 12-month training program for graduate students enrolled in an APA approved Clinical Psychology doctoral program interested in developing a career in the field of health psychology.  Through the externship, students obtain intensive exposure to clinical care of patients with cancer and their family members including learning about the disease of cancer, the impact it has on the psychosocial functioning of adult patients and family members throughout various stages of development, concrete and comprehensive interventions, and the role of mental health professionals in a medical environment.  Externs will receive this training in an outpatient center through close supervision, clinical work in a variety of medical oncology settings, observations and didactic training including case conferences and lectures.

Youth Stress & Mood Program. A Depression & Suicide Prevention Program offers a Medical Psychology Externship program at UCLA's Semel Institute. This is a 12-month training program for graduate students. Will consider applicants with at least 2 years of graduate education in clinical psychology who are in good standing. The emphasis of the program is on training focused on youth depression, suicide prevention, and reducing health risk behaviors (e.g. Obesity risk, substance use, smoking, risky sex).
Supervised experience is available in diagnostic evaluations, cognitive-behavior therapy, family education and treatment, individual and group treatment approaches, and other interventions. The emphasis is on evidence-based evaluation, treatment, and clinical decision making. The program provides clinical training within the context of a clinical service with a strong research component. Treatment and services trials are in progress funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and other organizations. Theses projects focus on suicide and suicide attempt prevention, treatment of youth depression, and improving health and reducing health risk behaviors
