The Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is located within the Semel Institute and Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital; its faculty is responsible for the education, research, and patient care services of the Semel Institute and Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and for the School of Medicine curriculum in psychiatry. The Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences curriculum for medical students is designed to provide an understanding of:

  1. Normal human development
  2. Health behavior
  3. Common psychopathological processes and their management
  4. The applications of psychiatric understanding to general neuroscience patient care

Special attention is paid to understanding the underlying common psychological and psychiatric problems seen in clinical medical practice, and psychophysiological (psychosomatic) aspects of medicine. Emphasis is placed on the doctor patient relationship and the interdisciplinary mental health team.

Many programs are available at UCLA for postgraduate training in psychiatry. Three full residency training programs, the UCLA Semel Institute/Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, West Los Angeles Healthcare Center Integrated Residency Program, the UCLA San Fernando Valley Psychiatry Training Program, and the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Residency Program, work closely with one another to insure that the special qualities of each program are enhanced by the common efforts of the combined talents of all the UCLA faculty. The selection of residents is conducted separately by each program.
